Delegation visits the Kliniken Schmieder for an exchange with colleagues

Visit from Kazakhstan

The visit from 30.11. to 02.12.2022 took place as a part of the cooperation between the Medical University of Karaganda and the Kliniken Schmieder, which was only concluded in October this year. Prof. Nailya Sheveleva, Medical Director of the Department of Rehabilitation at the University of Karaganda, led the delegation. She was accompanied by Dr. Galiya Zhanaspayeva, Head of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Kazakh Ministry of Health, and Dr. Alexander Dubovikhin, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Karaganda.

During the three days, an extensive programme was planned for the visitors, which included a visit on the ward and accompanying the therapists during the daily therapies. In addition, numerous specialist lectures were held, e.g. on the topic of early rehabilitation. “Especially the early rehabilitation of neurological patients with a Barthel Index <30 points was of great interest to us,” explains Prof. Sheveleva. This phase of treatment is one of the specialities of the Kliniken Schmieder and was therefore an important part on the programme.

“The colleagues made great efforts to give our guests a realistic insight into their daily work,” reports Stefan Boeckle, Director International Relations at Kliniken Schmieder, who organized and accompanied the trip. In addition to early rehabilitation, there were lectures on the German health care system, neuroradiology, neurological rehabilitation, and the main research areas of the Lurija Institute, the research institute of Kliniken Schmieder operated together with the University of Constance.

The specialist lectures, for example on the subject of research at the Kliniken Schmieder, as well as the discussion about possible joint research projects were particularly interesting. “There are numerous issues where I can imagine a joint scientific cooperation with the colleagues from Kazakhstan,” adds Prof. Joachim Liepert, head physician of neurological rehabilitation in Allensbach.

At the end of the three days, there is a better understanding on both sides, both about the possibilities as well as the needs of the colleagues. This will now find its way into a first concrete draft for the next joint steps. One aspect of the cooperation will be online lectures, with which both institutions will promote the mutual exchange of expertise in the field of rehabilitation of neurological diseases. This is already under way and the first lecture will be held on 15th December 2022.
